I’m an Addict, Sort of

I watch A LOT of tv.

I would say my addiction started when I was in primary school but it was monitored and very limited. My father was explaining to his brother that he was removing cartoon network from the STV channels because my sister and I watched it too much and my sister especially could not function on daily tasks like getting ready for school because of the television. My uncle noticed how miserable we were without it and begged and pleaded for us to keep Cartoon Network, and we did! 🙂 Flintstones, Jetsons, Tom and Jerry, Popeye, SWAT Kats, Captain Planet, Looney Tunes all day, errrrday!

Late 90s – Early 00s

The cartoons I watched during this time included Animaniacs, Dexter’s Laboratory, Johnny Bravo, Cow and Chicken, Power Puff Girls, Ed, Edd n Eddy, Mike Lu and Og, Voltron, G-Force, and Thundercats. Going into my secondary school days, the cartoon love affair continued and evolved to drawing them. Graduating from pausing my Beauty and the Beast VHS and tracing Belle’s face off of the screen, I started to base all human representations in my art work off of Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z characters.

I started watching other shows like Boy Meets World, Even Stevens, Full House, 7th Heaven, and Home Improvement. Music video channels like Much Music birthed my obsession with The Backstreet Boys and even though BET was banned, I’d still hide and watch it because I heard 106th and Park was the best show on tv ever!

Mid 00s – 2010

By this time my TV show scheduling became serious. I began having to keep track and scheduling as I added more and more to my listings. I had to make sure I kept track of dates and times of my shows in my head along with my school work to make sure I never missed an episode of Roswell, Gilmore Girls or even Smallville when it changed from Thursdays to Fridays. Comedy shows and sitcoms like Friends were not prioritized and would be sacrificed if there was a clash (even though by now I’ve watched every episode multiple times). Shows with strong romantic stories, such as The OC, 90210, and Gossip Girl, were never missed. Cartoons were replaced by anime like Bleach.

When I got my own laptop in 2009 my couch days reduced significantly. I was able to schedule an hour of TV a night to show prioritization to studying and school work, and stream the rest of my shows online to catch up. These included Desperate Housewives, Brothers and Sisters, The Game and Heroes.

2010 – Today

My TV show preferences matured as I did and were now less censored. Rome, Spartacus and Game of Thrones were never to be watched in the presence of others – like parents – due to scenes of gore and nudity.

My current list of TV shows is as follows:

Sundays:

  • Once Upon a Time

  • Supergirl
  • Blindspot
  • Gotham
  • Scorpion
